Wiltshire Race League #4
The Highworth 5 played host to Race #4 of the Wiltshire Race League, with over 300 runners attracted to the start line despite the inclement conditions with a very strong representation from the Swindon based clubs. However it was Michael Towler of Avon Valley Runners who stole the show. From the start, three times race winner Chris Illman of Cirencester AC took off at a blistering pace covering the first mile in a shade under five minutes with Mike Towler alongside club mate Dan Woolford running in second around ten seconds behind. However at two miles Mike started to close down on the leader and by three miles had started to pull away before seizing victory in a time of 26:48. Avon Valley Runners claimed maximum points for the Wiltshire League ahead of Swindon Harriers and Swindon Striders, but Chippenham Harriers still hang onto the top spot albeit with an inferior score to second placed Avon Valley Runners. Finishing in 13th place David Vaudin of Team Bath remains the League’s top points scorer with a tally of 378.
In the Ladies race, Wendy Nichols of Cirencester AC took victory in 29:53 whilst in second Kate Jacobs of Swindon Harriers was the leading Wiltshire athlete with third placed Meredith Grimsley leading Highworth Running Club to maximum league points ahead of Chippenham Harriers who remain top ahead of Avon Valley Runners, who in Helen Maria have the top points scorer with a tally of 335.
The next race in the Wiltshire Race League is the Bath Hilly 10 on Sunday June 3rd.
